CPS Unit No. 97, subunit 23, located in Coos County, Oregon, was operated by the Brethren Service Committee.
Directors: Mark Schrock, Ora Huston
One of the wives of a farm hand located on a farm in the Pacific Northwest wrote a letter to Ora Huston describing her husband’s work.
Well, now for Jack’s work. He is running two double unit milking machines. The boss strips the cows. At present there are fifty-six cows in the herd. In between milkings, they do maintenance work and field work. Next week they will start putting up silage. The milk goes to the cheese factory at Arago. Jack works usually about thirteen hours a day. . . .
The work hasn’t seemed to bother him, but he is asleep on his feet half the time. He is certainly hoping he will have a little more time when the fall rains begin. On Saturdays and Sundays he gets from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. off, but of course he still puts in an eight or eight and a half hour day. However, in spite of the hours we are more than pleased. (June 11, 1945 quoted in Eisan p. 243)
