Summary:

CPS Unit No. 115, subunit 5, located at Welfare Island Hospital in Welfare Island, New York, subjected CPS men to experiments studying the effect of high altitude.

 

Charles Glen King and Dr. Alvin L. Barach directed part one on the effect of low oxygen on nutritional requirements.  Eleven men at a time were assigned to the project which took place at Goldwater Memorial Hospital (formerly Welfare Island Hospital?).  The American Friends Service Committee served as oversight agency on this part of the project sponsored by the Nutrition Foundation, Inc., which ran from September 1943 through November 1945(?).

 

Dr. Morris Eckman directed part two (?) of this project on high altitude which took place from July 1944 through November 1945.  Two men at a time were assigned to this phase sponsored by the Aviation Research Laboratory at Columbia University. The Brethren Service Committee served as oversight agency.
